SAT and PSAT Administration

Registration and Scheduling

  • PSAT 8/9: Offered once per year (typically October) for grades 8–9
  • PSAT 10: Offered once per year (typically April) for grade 10
  • SAT: Offered 7 times per year (typically September through June)
  • School Day Testing: Option to administer SAT or PSAT during the school day for all students

Testing Windows and Deadlines

Each test date has specific registration deadlines and late registration periods. Monitor College Board's test calendar to avoid missing deadlines and plan your school's testing strategy.

Typical timeline: Registration opens 4–6 weeks before test date → Late registration opens 1–2 weeks before → Test date → Score release 2–3 weeks after test date.

Score Reporting and Student Access

Students can access their SAT and PSAT scores online through their College Board account. As a school administrator, you'll receive school-level data and individual student reports. Use this data to identify students who may benefit from additional SAT preparation or college planning support.

AP Exam Administration

Registration and Scheduling

AP exams are administered once per year in May. Registration typically opens in the fall (October–November) and closes in early March. Coordinate with your AP teachers to confirm which exams your students will take and plan your testing logistics early.

  • Single Testing Window: All AP exams administered during a 2-week period in May
  • Exam Fee: Currently $98 per exam (subject to change). Plan your budget accordingly.
  • School Code: Ensure your school code is active and up-to-date in the AP registration system

Fee Reduction and Waivers

College Board is committed to making AP accessible to all students. Fee reductions and waivers are available for low-income students. Work with your school's financial aid office to identify eligible students and process fee reductions.

Fee Reduction: $30 per exam for students from families with income below 250% of the federal poverty level.

Fee Waiver: Full exam fee waived for students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Many states also offer additional AP exam fee support programs.

Accommodations for AP Exams

Students with documented disabilities can request accommodations for AP exams. Submit accommodation requests through the AP Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) office. Common accommodations include extended time, separate testing room, and assistive technology.

Accommodation requests must be submitted by the AP Exam registration deadline. Plan ahead to ensure students receive the support they need.

Score Distribution

AP exam scores are released in early July. Students can access their scores online, and you'll receive school-level data and individual student reports. Use this data to celebrate student achievement and identify areas for program improvement.

Accommodations and Accessibility Support

Approved Accommodations

College Board offers a range of accommodations for students with documented disabilities to ensure they can demonstrate their knowledge fairly. Common accommodations include:

  • Extended time (1.5x or 2x standard time)
  • Separate, quiet testing room
  • Large print or Braille test materials
  • Screen reader and assistive technology
  • Sign language interpreter
  • Rest breaks and medication administration

Documentation and Approval Process

Accommodation requests require documentation of the student's disability and the need for accommodations. For SAT and PSAT, submit requests through the College Board Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) portal. For AP exams, work with the AP Services for Students with Disabilities office.

Key steps: 1) Student or school submits accommodation request with supporting documentation; 2) College Board reviews and approves/denies; 3) Student receives accommodation approval letter; 4) School coordinates testing logistics.

Supporting Students with Accommodations

Once accommodations are approved, coordinate with your testing administrator to ensure smooth implementation. Communicate with the student about their accommodations, practice with the testing format if needed (especially for technology-based accommodations), and ensure your testing room is set up to support the student's needs.

Best Practices for Managing Testing Logistics at Scale

Planning and Organization

  • Create a master testing calendar: Map all SAT, PSAT, and AP test dates, registration deadlines, and score release dates for the school year
  • Communicate early and often: Share testing information with students, parents, and teachers well in advance
  • Assign clear responsibilities: Designate a testing coordinator, registration manager, and accommodations contact
  • Use school day testing when possible: School day testing increases participation and simplifies logistics

Registration and Fee Management

  • Register students early: Don't wait until the last minute. Plan registration during registration windows to avoid late fees and deadline stress
  • Identify fee reduction-eligible students: Work with your school's financial aid office to identify and process fee reductions proactively
  • Track registrations and fees: Use a spreadsheet or database to track which students are registered, which have paid, and which need fee reductions
  • Plan your budget: Allocate funds for fee reductions, waivers, and school-level testing costs

Testing Day Coordination

  • Prepare test administrators: Ensure all proctors and test administrators are trained on exam procedures, security requirements, and accommodation protocols
  • Verify student rosters: Confirm that all registered students are present and that no unregistered students attempt to test
  • Manage accommodations: Set up separate testing rooms for students with accommodations and ensure proctors understand the accommodation requirements
  • Secure test materials: Follow all College Board security protocols for test materials. Store materials securely before and after testing.

Data Use and Follow-Up

  • Analyze school-level data: Review aggregate scores to identify trends, gaps, and areas for improvement in test preparation
  • Support individual students: Use individual score reports to identify students who may need additional SAT preparation or college planning support
  • Share results with stakeholders: Communicate results to students, parents, and teachers in a timely manner
  • Plan next steps: Use data to inform college planning, course selection, and test preparation strategies

Troubleshooting and Support Resources

Common Issues and Solutions

Student didn't receive registration confirmation

Check email spam folder. Log into the student's College Board account to verify registration status. Contact College Board support if registration is not showing.

Accommodation request was denied

Review the denial reason and work with your special education team to gather additional documentation if needed. Appeal the decision through the appropriate College Board office (SSD for SAT/PSAT, AP SSD for AP exams).

Student scores are not released on expected date

Check the official score release calendar. Scores may be delayed due to technical issues or security concerns. Contact College Board support for updates.

Technical issues during testing

Document the issue immediately and report to your testing coordinator. Contact College Board's technical support for guidance on next steps (may involve makeup testing or score cancellation).
